Generic drug industry agrees to cut prices up to 40% in 5-year deal with provinces March 14 2018
Canada's generic drug industry has agreed to cut prices 25% to 40% for provincial/public drug plans, in exchange for suspending open tenders for five years.
The deal, announced on January 29, 2018 by the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance (pCPA) – the organization that negotiates group discounts on behalf of Canada's public drug plans – comes less than a year after Quebec threatened to upend the generic-pharmaceutical business by forcing companies to submit bids to become the sole supplier of particular medications.
The price discounts are to start on April 1 and will apply to nearly 70 commonly prescribed generic drugs including those for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression.
