Time Off to Vote: Preparing for Ontario’s June 7th Election May 30 2018
Under Ontario’s Election Act, an employee who is eligible to vote must have three consecutive hours free from work to cast a ballot while the polls are open. Polls across Ontario will be open from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm on June 7, 2018.
If an employee’s scheduled hours of work do not provide for three consecutive hours off during voting times, the employee is entitled to request paid time off which the employer must provide. For example, if an employee is scheduled to work 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, the employee is entitled to the last hour off, with pay, to allow for three consecutive hours to vote. By contrast, an employee who is scheduled from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm is not entitled to time off to vote since they already have three consecutive hours after their regular working hours.
