Remembrance Day as a Statutory Holiday April 27 2018

On March 1, Bill C-311: An Act to Amend the Holidays Act received royal assent. The changes under this Act may alter the way employers observe Remembrance Day. The Act’s purpose is to recognize November 11, Remembrance Day, as a legal holiday.

Remembrance Day is currently recognized as a statutory holiday under the Canada Labour Code and in all Canadian jurisdictions other than Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia. The amendment to the Act does not force these four provinces to revisit legislation, as it is up to the provinces to determine whether or not it should be a statutory holiday.
