Extension of EI Sick Benefits and Family Medical Leave under the Canada Labour Code December 16 2022
Beginning on December 18, 2022, EI sickness benefits have been permanently extended from 15 weeks to 26 weeks. Individuals who establish a new claim after December 18, 2022, will receive 26 weeks of EI sickness benefits if they are sick and require this time to recover. EI sickness benefits are paid at 55% of the applicant’s average weekly insurable earnings, up to a maximum entitlement of $638 for 2022.
Also beginning on December 18, 2022, the maximum length for unpaid medical leave under the Canada Labour Code has been extended from 17 weeks to 27 weeks.

Prolongation des prestations de maladie de l’assurance-emploi et du congé familial pour raisons médicales prévus par le Code canadien du travail
Le 18 décembre 2022, la durée des prestations de maladie de l’assurance-emploi est passée de 15 semaines à 26 semaines. Il s’agit d’un changement permanent. Les personnes qui présentent une nouvelle demande de prestations après le 18 décembre 2022 recevront 26 semaines de prestations de maladie de l’assurance-emploi si elles sont malades et ont besoin de temps pour se rétablir. Les prestations de maladie de l’assurance-emploi versées au demandeur représentent 55 % de sa rémunération hebdomadaire assurable moyenne, jusqu’à concurrence de 638 $ pour 2022.
De plus, le 18 décembre 2022, la durée maximale d’un congé non payé pour raisons médicales prévu par le Code canadien du travail est passée de 17 semaines à 27 semaines.
