Upcoming Minimum Wage Increases March 05 2024

The following minimum wage increases will come into effect on April 1, 2024:

New Brunswick - $15.30 per hour

Newfoundland & Labrador - $15.60 per hour

Nova Scotia - $15.20 per hour

Yukon - $17.59 per hour

Nova Scotia: Changes to Hiring Travel Nurses February 14 2024

To help create more stability in healthcare and long-term care, the government of Nova Scotia announced that travel nurses working for Nova Scotia Health, IWK Health or government-funded long-term care facilities can only be hired for a maximum of 180 days. Travel nurses must wait one year before they can be assigned to work as a travel nurse for these government institutions again.

Further, nurses graduating from post-secondary institutions in Nova Scotia cannot work as travel nurses in the province for one year following graduation.

Nova Scotia: Sick Notes August 16 2023

As of July 1, 2023 employers can no longer ask employees for sick notes unless the employee has been absent for more than five (5) working days, or has already had two absences of five or fewer working days in the previous 12-month period.

Nouvelle-Écosse : Certificat médical

 

À compter du 1er juillet 2023, les employeurs ne peuvent plus demander aux employés un certificat médical à moins que l’employé ait été absent pendant plus de cinq (5) jours ouvrables ou qu’il ait déjà eu deux absences de cinq jours ou moins au cours de la période de 12 mois précédente.

Nova Scotia: COVID-19 Paid Sick Leave May 18 2021

Nova Scotians who need to take time off work because of COVID-19 may qualify for up to 4 paid sick days through the COVID-19 Sick Leave Program. Businesses can apply for reimbursement for an employee’s pay when an employee needs to take time off. Applications open May 26, 2021.

Nova Scotia: Province implements changes to Compassionate Care Leave, Bereavement Leave January 20 2016

As of January 3rd, workers in Nova Scotia have been afforded more time to care for critically ill family members and grieved deceased ones.

The Nova Scotia Board of Labour and Education implemented extensions, first introduced on November 19th, to the province’s Labour Standards Code.  Following these modifications, compassionate care leave has been extended from eight (8) to a maximum of twenty-eight (28) weeks. Bereavement leave has similarly been extended to five (5) consecutive days.

As a result of these changes, Nova Scotia’s regulations regarding compassionate care leave have been brought in line with recent federal labour legislation. Nova Scotia is the first province to match federal compassionate care changes.

 

Nouvelle-Écosse : la province met en œuvre des changements aux congés pour soins de compassion et de deuil

Depuis le 3 janvier, les travailleurs de la Nouvelle-Écosse ont désormais droit à plus de temps pour s'occuper d’un membre de leur famille gravement malade ou pleurer un être cher décédé.

Le Conseil des relations de travail et de l’éducation de la Nouvelle-Écosse a mis en place des prorogations à la durée des congés prévue au Code des normes du travail de la province, instaurées initialement le 19 novembre.  Suite à ces modifications, la durée du congé pour soins de compassion a été prolongée de huit (8) à un maximum de vingt-huit (28) semaines. Un congé de deuil a été prorogé de la même manière à cinq (5) jours consécutifs.

En raison de ces modifications, les règlements de la Nouvelle-Écosse concernant le congé de compassion ont été alignés sur la récente législation du travail. La Nouvelle-Écosse est la première province à s’harmoniser avec les modifications législatives fédérales en matière de congé de compassion.
